Engine and Performance

Under the hood of the Ford Ranger is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. It generates 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, which is a best-in-class ability. This means that you'll have an exciting drive no matter where you go, whether you have to climb up a mountainous road, need to transport heavy cargo, or are embarking on a long road trip.

The engine is paired with a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. This transmission is responsive and gives you the power you need, right when you need it. You can choose Tow/Haul mode when you have a trailer behind you and want to optimize performance given the situation. When your truck has the proper trailering equipment, you'll be able to tow up to 7,500 pounds. If your work involves loading up your bed with cargo, that won't be a problem either since the Ford Ranger has a payload rating of 1,860 pounds.

As you'd expect, the Ford Ranger can be set up with a 4x4 drivetrain. A 4x2 drivetrain is the standard option, but if you think you'll need extra traction to get through difficult conditions more safely, we'd recommend going with the 4x4 system. Also available is an electronic-locking rear differential, which you might want to consider if you're planning on going off-roading. No matter what you end up choosing, you'll benefit from having an independent front suspension with a tubular stabilizer bar, a fully boxed frame that's rigid and supportive, and Hotchkiss leaf springs in the back.

Safety

It goes without saying that we want you to be safe at all times. We're so pleased that Ford has integrated numerous safety mechanisms into the new Ford Rangers. First, there are several passive features that will protect you if an accident ever occurs. There are multiple airbags to shield you from some impact, four-wheel anti-lock brakes to reduce skidding, and three-point seat belts with pretensioners.

There are also advanced components that play active roles in keeping you out of harm's way. The one you'll likely use every day is the rear-view camera. It automatically turns on when you're in reverse to show you what's behind you, and you'll be able to use the assist grid to get a better idea of which direction you should be steering.

The truck knows how to keep itself stable to enhance your feeling of control. Curve Control can slow you down if you're taking a turn too fast, Roll Stability Control can modify your engine power and brake pressure to keep all four of your wheels on the ground, and Trailer Sway Control plays an important role when you're towing.

Ford Co-Pilot360 technology is found on every trim of the Ford Ranger, and one of its main features is pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking. With this system, your truck can sense whether a frontal collision is likely to occur and if so, you'll be prompted to take action. If you can't react in time, the truck can hit the brakes on your behalf in an effort to avoid a collision. Further, the Ranger can be built with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, a lane-keeping system, and adaptive cruise control. These are all available on the lower trims and standard on the higher trims. In addition, the most premium Ford Ranger has reverse and forward sensing systems to make it easier to avoid hitting obstacles that you might not be able to see.

Interior and Technology

All of our Rangers come with a MyKey system, and some have intelligent access with push-button start for convenience. While the truck is durable, it's also comfortable and nicely appointed. Interior lighting, power door locks, an available auto-dimming rearview mirror, and multiple power outlets are all features you can take advantage of. High-end elements, like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-operated front seats, and storage compartments in the cabin, can all be found on select trims of the Ranger.

If technology is important, you'll be happy to hear that the Ranger can be a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. SYNC3 technology is available, and it comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an eight-inch touchscreen. Opt for navigation and SiriusXM radio if you want to stay connected and entertained.

Trim Options

There are three available trims on the 2020 Ford Ranger. The Ranger XL is the entry-level model, and it comes with 16-inch silver steel wheels, Bluetooth, a smart-charging USB port, and front bucket seats with a center console. Upgrading to the Ranger XLT will give you 17-inch wheels, reverse sensing, blind-spot monitoring, a power locking tailgate, halogen fog lamps, and smartphone connectivity. If you're looking for something more sophisticated, the Lariat is for you. It comes with ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, 18-inch wheels, and LED headlamps and fog lamps.
